B.R.Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

The B.R.Hills wildlife sanctuary situated in Karnataka State in South India at a height of 5,091 feet above sea level is spread over an area of 540 sq km. The hills are named after the ancient Ranganatha Swamy Temple, which stands at the edge of an over 1000 ft. precipice.

The wildlife sanctuary is an expanse of hills and valleys with deciduous forests dominating the land. The B.R.Hills also called the Biligirirangana hills is located between the Cauvery and Tungabhadra Rivers.The Wildlife Sanctuary is thriving with birds. With over 215 birds to study it is a bird watcher’s delight. Birds like the Yellow Throated Bulbul, Paradise Flycatcher, Raquet-Tailed Drango and the crested Hawk eagle are some of the birds that color the forest with their liveliness.

How to reach

Air: The nearest airport is Bangalore via Mysore which lies at a distance of 224 kms.

Rail: The nearest railway station to the hills is Mysore lying 90 km away. This atation is linked to other parts of the state as well.

Road: The B.R Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected by the roadways. It is 90 km from Mysore and 224 km from Bangalore. This sanctuary can be reached by road, one from Yelandur and the other from Chamarajanagar.

 

 

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Kerala, India. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary extends over the talukas of Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola in Idukki district. It is at a distance of about 40 Kms from Thodupuzha in Kerela, a place, which has contributed many well known personalities to the development of India as well as from where the famous river of Thodupuzha flows. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, India is famous for Indian elephants, which are becoming extinct due to poaching and other factors that are causing the deaths of these elephants.

How to reach

Air: The nearest airport Cochin, 132 km away.

Rail: No rail line in the district. Nearest Railway station at Kottayam, 133 km away.

Road: Kochi-Madura, N H 49 goes through Idukki district. Thodupuzha, the major town in the district, is well connected with other parts of the district and the state.

 

 

Madhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

Madhumalai means old hills. Madhumalai Sanctuary, rich in bio-diversity and dense vegetation, is sandwiched between the Bandipur and Annamalai sanctuaries, and together the three form the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats, with the Mysore-Ooty highway passing through it. It is situated at an elevation of 1000 metres and extends over an area of 321 sq. kms where lie the sanctuary between Kerala and Karnataka states

How to reach

Air: : The nearest Airport is in Coimbatore, Bangalore.

Rail:: The nearest rail junction is in Ooty, Mysore and Coimbatore.

Road:: Madumalai can be accessed from three states- Karnataka via Mysore, which is only 91 km away; Tamil Nadu (where the sanctuary is located) through Ooty, which is 64 km away and from Kerala through Coimbatore (160 km). You can also board a bus from the Ooty bus stand.

 

 

Bandipur National Park

Bandipur National Park is a beautiful forest reserve located in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. This national park occupies a special place in India's efforts towards natural conservation. It was created in the 1930s from the local Maharaja Voodiyar's hunting lands, and named Venugopal Wildlife Park. Apart from being home to the Asiatic elephant, Bandipur also has a sizable number of tigers.

Air: The nearest airport is Bangalore, 220 km.

Rail: The nearest railhead is Mysore, 80 km.
